People now ask ChatGPT and Google's AI Mode things like "best long distance movers in Tampa" or "a good kitchen remodeler in Denver". The assistant names a handful of businesses, and many people start with those. For a job worth thousands, being on that short list matters.
What the assistants look at
In September 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode the questions customers ask about movers, remodelers, med spas, auto repair shops, hair salons and tattoo studios in six US cities, and collected 628 answers. A few things stood out:
- ChatGPT linked mostly to the businesses' own websites, far more than to directories or review sites. A clear site that says what you do and where gives it something to cite.
- Google's AI Mode leaned on Google's own pages, Reddit and Yelp, then on sites like Thumbtack, Groupon, Instagram and Angi. Your listings there feed its answers.
- Gemini linked mostly to businesses' own sites too, plus one big directory per trade, like Houzz for remodelers. (From our October run of 190 Gemini answers; our September collector missed most of Gemini's links.)
- The answers kept changing. Asked the same question three times, Gemini and AI Mode named about half the businesses in only one of the three answers; ChatGPT about a quarter. One check tells you little; you need to ask several times.
- Reviews went with being named. Of businesses with under 20 Google reviews, 2% were named; of those with 100 to 250 reviews, 31%. More in our reviews study.
How Glowsearch helps
Lite is $19.99 a month for your website, questions and action plan. Start with your own questions from day one.
- You add your website. We write the questions your customers would ask, with your city in them, the way people really ask. You can change them.
- Choose weekly to daily scans. Each question goes to ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode twice per scan, in real browsers, signed out and from your country. Pro adds Claude.
- You see who wins. How often you're named, which competitors are named instead, and the pages the assistants cite.
- You get an action plan sorted by priority after every scan. For local businesses it's usually:
- Get listed on the directories and review sites the assistants cite for your city, where your competitors are and you aren't.
- Add the pages customers ask about: a page for each service, the areas you serve, prices or price ranges, and answers to common questions.
- Correct wrong facts, like old hours, services you don't offer or a wrong service area.
- Join the local threads on Reddit that the assistants cite, honestly, as the business.
- Fix crawler access when AI crawlers can't read your site.
A drafting button writes the listing request, page text or reply for each one.
Pricing
Lite is $19.99 a month for one website and 40 questions scanned twice a week, or 80 once a week, or fewer scanned more often. Every plan starts with a 7-day trial for $1, including your first scan. Good to know
- Questions for your city. We ask from your country. Put your city in your questions, as your customers do, and the assistants answer for that city.
- Get the words ready. We show you where to be and draft the listing request, page text or reply; you review and send it.
Questions local businesses ask
Ask it the way a customer would: in a new chat, signed out, "best [your service] in [your city]", without your business name. Or use the free AI visibility check: we write three customer questions from your homepage, ask ChatGPT in a real browser and show whether it named you and who it named instead.
It depends a lot on the trade. In October 2026 we asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Google's AI Mode 20 customer questions per trade in Denver, Charlotte, Tampa and Phoenix, about 115 answers per trade:
| Trade | Sites linked most (share of answers) |
|---|---|
| Home remodelers | Houzz 34%, Thumbtack 16%, Angi 12% |
| Personal injury lawyers | Super Lawyers 16%, Avvo 10%, Justia 9%, Thumbtack 9% |
| Med spas | RealSelf 12%, Vagaro 7%, The Clinic Compass 6%, Zenoti 6% |
| Dentists | Mostly the practices' own websites; Zocdoc 8% at most |
The samples are small, but the pattern is clear: in most trades a few directories feed the answers, and being listed on them is the first step.
Probably, if your customers use Google's AI Mode. In our 628-answer scan of local services, AI Mode linked Google's own pages, Reddit and Yelp most often. ChatGPT mostly linked to the businesses' own websites.
Lite covers one website. Put each city in your questions, the way customers ask, and the assistants answer for that city. Pro covers three websites.
